Ryan Basden With a little luck, the last ever iteration of my personal site.

FreeBSD jails

Proxmox has been great for my first big home server build, but I've found that I don't use much of its features set. Any work I do on ZFS is better from a shell (not to mention that Proxmox doesn't give you the option) and most of the containers I spin up come from public templates anyway, which I pull and customize from the shell.

I like the idea of having a less bloated server setup via FreeBSD and just using thin jails for kernel separation.

werc

Just migrated my originally static HTML site to werc, partially as way to stop endlessly hopping between static site generators. So far, I'm a big fan of the simplicity. For reference, this particular repo made it almost effortless.

And my whole site now updates, formatting and all, with a single rsync command. Zen.

Touch Typing

I learned to type because of Runescape, starting all the way back in 2004. Every bit of my typing has been done since then with the middle and index fingers on each hand, sans hitting the space bar or other keys on the far sides of the keyboard like Enter and Shift, which my pinky fingers handled well.

And yet, I could still type well over 90 words per minute with my so-called "gamer mode" typing style. But late last year, it became clear to me that it was time for a change if I wanted to be able to use a keyboard that was more ergonomic. After a few months of retraining my brain, I'm finally up near 85 WPM on average.

Ergonomic Split Keyboard

Part of getting older while making a career in tech is an inevitable fixation on ergonomic workspaces, so I bought an Ultimate Hacking Keyboard and already wish I had made this switch sooner. Such a joy to type on and the wrist strain I previously dealt with while using my Keychron K2 has disappeared.

iPod Classic Mods

I'm exploring how to modify my old (but still quite functional) iPod Classic with a bigger battery and expanded flash storage.
